This past weekend, I took a trip to Sedona with my wife. If you've ever been, you know the place is pure magic—towering red rocks, crisp desert air, and an energy that just makes you feel alive. I spent time golfing, hiking, unplugging, and just being present.
As I sat atop Cathedral Rock watching the sunset, it hit me: Nature doesn’t try to be anything other than what it is. The rocks don’t wish they were waterfalls, the cacti don’t envy the pines, and the sky doesn’t tone itself down for anyone. Everything just exists as it is—completely unique, completely irreplaceable.
And that’s exactly how we should approach marketing our businesses.
The Power of Showing Up as Yourself
Too many business owners get caught up in trying to sound “professional” or “corporate” when marketing themselves. They worry about looking too small, too casual, or too different. So, they strip out all the personality, all the quirks, all the things that make them… them. The result? A business that blends into the noise instead of standing out.
But here’s the truth: The best way to differentiate yourself is to be yourself. Your voice, your experiences, your perspective—that’s what makes your brand one-of-a-kind. And in a world where customers are bombarded with choices, the businesses that win aren’t always the ones with the flashiest ads or the lowest prices. They’re the ones that make people feel something. That build real relationships. That are undeniably human.
People Connect with People, Not Brands
Think about your own buying habits. Do you buy from a company because they have the fanciest website? Or do you choose the one whose story resonates with you, who makes you feel like they actually care about you and your project?
I recently spoke with a home builder who was struggling to attract the right clients. His website looked like every other builder’s site—sleek, generic, and full of images of great looking work. But when I met him in person? He was engaging, full of knowledge, and had a passion for craftsmanship that was contagious. The problem? None of that personality showed up in his marketing.
When we started weaving his story into his content—talking about how he learned the trade from his grandfather, how he believes a home should be built to last generations—something amazing happened. People started reaching out because of those details. They weren’t just hiring a builder; they were hiring him.
Embrace Your Individuality—It’s Your Biggest Advantage
Too often, we hold ourselves back because we think we have to fit into some mold of what a “professional” should look like. But your quirks, your voice, and your unique way of doing things? That’s what draws the right people to you.
So, here’s my challenge to you: Stop filtering yourself. Show up in your marketing the way you show up in real life. Tell your story. Share your opinions. Let people see the real, authentic you.
Because just like Sedona’s landscape—rugged, vibrant, and completely its own—your individuality is a gift. And the more you embrace it, the more your business will attract the people who truly connect with you.
